Not as bad as some reviewers have mentioned, although not one of her best works. In my opinion, the main character, Dodge, was the best written character in the novel. He represents an interesting take on Ms. Brown’s male characters since he was older, ornery, and rather complex. I have to say that I was surprised at the plot twist in the ending. All in all, much better than Smash Cut, where we originally met Dodge.
Tough Customer: A Novel Overview
Colleagues, friends, and lovers know Dodge Hanley as a private investigator who doesn’t let rules get in his way—in his private life as well as his professional one. If he breaks a heart, or bends the law in order to catch a criminal, he does so without hesitation or apology. That’s why he’s the first person Caroline King—who after a thirty-year separation continues to haunt his dreams—asks for help when a deranged stalker attempts to murder their daughter . . . the daughter Dodge has never met. He has a whole bagful of grudging excuses for wishing to ignore Caroline’s call, and one compelling reason to drop everything and fly down to Texas: guilt.Dodge’s mind may be a haze of disturbing memories and bad decisions, but he arrives in Houston knowing with perfect clarity that his daughter, Berry, is in danger. She has become the object of desire of a co-worker, a madman and genius with a penchant for puzzles and games who has spent the past year making Berry’s life hell, and who now has vowed to kill her.Dodge joins forces with local deputy sheriff Ski Nyland, but the alarming situation goes from bad to worse when the stalker begins to claim other victims and leaves an ominous trail of clues as he lethally works his way toward Berry. Sensing the killer drawing nearer, Dodge, who’s survived vicious criminals and his own self-destructive impulses, realizes that this time he’s in for the fight of his life.
From acclaimed best-selling author Sandra Brown, Tough Customer is a heart-pounding tale about obsession and murder, the fragile nature of relationships, and, possibly, second chances.

Now if you are thinking relations with zombies, luckily, no, that is not the case. See Brian Keene. In this zombie apocalypse story set in New York City, the author has thrown raging hormones in with rampaging zombies. The story follows a group of survivors as they travel from the subway when the outbreak first hits across the city seeking to escape the mayhem. The title of my review refers to how the two main characters can’t seem to control themselves as they run, fight, and hide. It’s a little distracting. At least, I think the sexual tension detracts a bit from a pretty well-written little zombie story.
The story focuses less on zombies and gore and more on the group of survivors and their interactions. Strong female and male main characters along with strong cast of supporting female characters make the story pretty interesting. The story stays tense throughout with plenty of action. I recommend it despite the raging hormones.
After the End Overview
The end of the world is only the beginning.
Zombies are on the loose and the world is falling apart. In the tradition of apocalyptic novels such as Stephen King’s THE STAND, a group of strangers on a Manhattan subway are brought together in the name of survival. The group follows the lead of Ari Brenner, a young man who doesn’t recognize his own leadership qualities and believes they follow him simply because he wears an army uniform. Lila Teske, a college student studying philosophy, finds her non-violent beliefs tested in the crucible of a zombie attack. There are other members of the diverse group, but the focus of the story is on Ari and Lila, two young people who learn about sacrifice and inner strength through the ordeal.
With the city’s infrastructure down and communication with the outside world curtailed the survivors head toward the nearest marina. When they meet a lab tech who may have a solution to the virus, they know his safety is paramount and it’s more important than ever that they get off the island. But zombies aren’t the only danger that impedes them on their perilous journey.
Have you ever felt so strongly about something you’d be willing to give up everything? Alex Swenson did when he questioned what honor and loyalty really meant to him. Author Steve Anderson has created a cast of diverse and interesting characters who all have their reasons for establishing new identities on the Big Island of Hawaii. Steve Anderson has captured regional accents in his writing so well that I could hear some of the characters voices in my head while reading. Honestly, Alex Swenson and I would probably not agree with each other while sharing our beliefs over brewskis. But I have to say, even though we are so different, I still found myself empathizing with him as Steve Anderson developed and expanded on this characters experience. By far my favorite character was Swenson’s girlfriend (Kanani) who I would love to see again in a future story. This was an easy to read, and well constructed story. I would recommend this book to anyone who can put their political ideals aside and enjoy the author’s efforts to create this thrilling chess match in paradise.
False Refuge Overview
Army reservist Alex Swenson has gone AWOL to avoid Iraq duty. He’s fled to the Big Island of Hawaii, where he finds himself attracted to cute and wily Kanani, a crime-world survivor searching for a better life. Yet Alex’s old army buddy, Jerry, is hot on Alex’s trail.
A secretive island haven, Krieger Estates, was supposed to grant Alex a new life and identity, but soon Alex finds that the estates’ amoral founders thrive on absolute power, lockstep obedience, and unjust violence. Fleeing’s no option this time. Alex refuses to play along and it brings his new overseers’ full wrath. To save Alex, Kanani and Jerry join forces with a hard-nosed plan that enlists even the rugged and unforgiving Big Island terrain itself, yet it’s Alex who’ll find a way free without relying on Kanani’s doomed schemes, or Jerry’s tragic sense of loyalty, or any savage methods. Alex will do it his way to the bitter end.
Sometimes I find that “mysteries” are so complicated there is no way a reader could ever answer any of the questions until they are answered for us at the end of the book. This story gave me enough information to feel like I was solving the puzzle along with Chapa. I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the circumstances that created the “villain” and feeling the personal/professional struggle that Chapa dealt with in his life. I don’t know if reporters are actually out there solving murders, but this book made it seem believable. This is my first book by this author and I will be looking for more.
